More About Me

the ageism first aid project

The Ageism First Aid (AFA) project was funded by a grant from the Retirement Research Foundation through the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), the educational section of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA).  Laurinda leads the AFA project team, which is comprised of members of the AGHE Academic Program Development Committee.

The first objective of the AFA project was to develop an online course to combat ageism within the health and helping professions, Ageism First Aid: Respectful, Effective, and Appropriate Communication Training.  The course provides facts about aging to replace the common myths and misconceptions that influence how we talk about and treat older people, and how we personally feel about aging.  It was written to be accessible for people of all education and linguistic backgrounds, and it is ideally suited for paraprofessionals and professionals working in the field of aging.

Take AFA or Connect to the Loyalty Program
The AFA online was launched nationally on the GSA website in November 2019.  If you are faculty or an administrators at a university/college or an administrator in the Aging Network interested in utilizing AFA, email your contact information including city, state, and zip to connect to the loyalty program.  The loyalty program gives you access to the course at the lowest fee possible while helping to support gerontology student scholarships and projects.
